My Short-Arm Quilting Set-up!

Went to the quilt show last weekend. Long story short, I have an awesome short-arm quilting rig and a slightly perturbed husband. But, it was a good deal!

  • Janome HD9 straight stitch machine. It's not quite "industrial" (no oil bed or separate motor mount), but it's definitely heavy duty and goes really fast - up to 1600 stitches per minute. It also has a generous bobbin size, automatic needle threader, and needle up/down feature. For quilting, I have the free-motion foot attached (same foot the 1600 used).  I have almost 7" of quilting depth.
  • The Q-zone Hoop-frame by Grace. Only 4-1/2" feet wide, but super easy to reposition the quilt and continue on my way. It can accommodate domestic and mid-arm machines up to 19" throat, and designed to work sitting or standing.
  • Grace Surestitch Regular. This closed the deal for me. Domestic set-up with high-end features. A stitch regular means no matter what speed I move the machine, the stitches will remain a consistent length. If you've ever tried to quilt on a domestic machine and coordinate your foot speed with moving your project you know valuable this is!
  • Gracie Laser Stylus. This is what makes pantographs possible!  You simply trace the pattern with the laser from behind the machine, and the design is stitched out onto the quilt (see picture).
